Listening to your Heart

Two years ago I made the decision to quit my job as a District Manager for a great company. It paid well, and I worked with some fantastic people. But I was stressed out, overworked and exhausted. It wasn't fun or fulfilling anymore. Working 60 plus hour weeks doing something you don't love can do that to a person. But more importantly for me, I was finding it harder and harder to feel gratitude for all that the job offered me; I wanted to do something more meaningful, and find a way to shine my light out into the world while helping others do the same.

I'm sure some people thought I was out of my mind to leave a job with great benefits and job security, but I didn't care. My heart was asking me (actually yelling at me) to make a change more in alignment with who I really am. Honestly, I was scared out of my mind to make the leap, but when I finally put in my notice, I felt a joy welling up inside me, excitement for the future, and a freedom I had not felt in years. It was intoxicating!

Did I have a job lined up? Nope! My plan? To travel, take photos, and remember what it feels like to be happy again. I had no idea it would bring me to where I am today, doing what I love and feeling like I am making a difference in the world. I'm so glad I took that first leap of faith in myself, finally listening to what my heart had been trying to tell me for years but I was too afraid to listen.

What I am continually discovering is that your heart always knows the way, if you just take the time to listen, and then follow its advice. Now, I'm not suggesting you quit your job tomorrow, but perhaps there is the voice that's been talking to you that you've been ignoring, asking you to meditate, start that gratitude journal, plan that trip, or get out into nature more. You can always start small! Whatever advice you decide to take from your heart, I promise, will lead you to a place of joy.
